UnF*ckingBelievable - Or Is It?

Federal officials have told the District [of Columbia] that it should cover [Presidential Inaugural] expenses by using some of the $240 million in federal homeland security grants it has received in the past three years -- money awarded to the city because it is among the places at highest risk of a terrorist attack.

(Props to Melissa for tipping me off to this before I even got to the Post Today. See how you rank, M? You are amongst my first reads of the day!)

I don't know. Call me crazy, but with soldiers dying every day in Iraq and the world still scrambling to aid victims of the Asian earthquake and tsunamis, it just doesn't seem like the right time for a gala event - a gala event with 9 (NINE!) separate balls - and expenses in excess of $30 million. That definitely takes "balls" of another kind.

It's not that Bush and the Republicans don't deserve to enjoy their election victory. I don't begrudge them the chance to celebrate and usher in Bush's second Reich, err, term. But show some humility, kick off your Presidential seal cowboy boots*, and scale things down a bit. Honor those who can't party like it's 2005.
